What is Digital Smile Design?

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a method to guide aesthetic dental work that integrates multiple dental specialties to create an ideal smile design that is in harmony with your lips, eyes and rest of your face. Different shapes and sizes of teeth can also reflect different personality traits as well as masculinity or femininity. DSD takes into account these factors as well in the smile design process. At Elite Dental, we use the power of DSD in the treatment planning stage for all of our smile makeover cases.

DSD follows principles taken from architectural design, engineering and manufacturing, which is very different from how aesthetic dentistry was approached previously. Too often in the past, the end result of your smile makeover could not be previewed and precisely controlled. Because beauty can be subjective, the final result could end up being very different from the one imagined by you and may not integrate in harmony with the rest of your face. DSD eliminates all this guesswork and unmet expectations regarding how your ideal smile should look like.

How does it work?

DSD uses a series of high resolution full frame digital photographs, 8k video recordings of your facial expressions and 3D virtual models of your teeth to analyse facial and dental relationships and proportions. This gives objective guidance in the evaluation, diagnosis and implementation of your aesthetic dental treatment.

What is a Smile Makeover?

A smile makeover is the process of improving the appearance of your smile through a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary combination of one or more aesthetic dental procedures, such as : dental veneers or crowns, dental implants, Invisalign/orthodontic treatment, gum contouring and/or teeth whitening, and etc.

Step 1: Consultation and Assessment

During your first visit, we will conduct a thorough examination and consultation to identify your treatment goals. Digital photos, videos, impressions or digital scans of your teeth and/or dental X-rays will then be taken to begin the digital smile design process.

Step 2: Digital Smile Design Process

The photos, videos, impressions, digital scans and dental X-rays will be used to create your digital smile design. This virtual design will then be transferred to a 3D virtual model of your teeth. This is your smile design prototype.

Step 3: Preview of your Smile Makeover

The smile prototype is then transferred into your mouth using a temporary tooth coloured material.

This allows you to have a visual preview of how your final smile would look like before we even begin! The prototype can then be further refined at this stage with your unique inputs.

Once you have approved the smile design after the refinements, the treatment discussion can then begin. We will discuss with you the number and type of procedures required to achieve the proposed design.

Step 4: The Smile Makeover Process

Your smile makeover will involve multi-disciplinary treatment executed by our team of dental surgeons, dental specialists and dental lab technicians. All aspects of your treatment will follow the blueprint laid out by the design prototype which you have approved earlier during the preview stage.
